Too often the importance of community is overlooked until a crisis or disaster unfolds, when residents suddenly unite to defend homes, protect property or save lives. Since 2003 Neighbour Day has been advocating stronger relationships between neighbours all year round.
When we work together we create sustainable, friendly communities while promoting tolerance, respect and understanding. Whether you live in the city or the bush, in a house, an apartment or on a farm knowing who your neighbours are creates a sense of community. You feel connected to the people who live around you and you care about what happens close to home.
I am very proud to support the National Compact because our communities are only as strong as the people who live in them. Working together to create healthy, tolerant and inclusive suburbs and towns must be a goal for every Australian, no matter where you live or your personal circumstances.
