National Families Week will be celebrated from 15 - 21 May 2012. The week coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on Tuesday 15 May, and is a celebration of the vital role that families play within our community.

This year, the theme for National Families Week is Families Make All the Difference: Helping Kids to Grow and Learn. Families Australia is encouraging everyone to remember the critical role that families play in our society. This Families Week, let's all take time to explore ways we can support each other—in our families and community.

The Department of Human Services is committed to providing support for all families through family assistance payments and services. They will also be supporting National Families Week this year by promoting the week and holding a range of local events in your area.

For more information about National Families Week, or to find details of local events, visit familiesaustralia.org.au.

Haemochromatosis Awareness Week

Haemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder in Australia, affecting 1 in 200 people of European origin.  The disorder is not well-known and under diagnosed.  Early diagnosis and treatment will completely prevent long term damage and illness. Haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb excess iron which over time may lead to serious and life-threatening symptoms. Haemochromatosis Awareness Week will raise awareness of the condition in the community and promote early detection.
